WEIGHTLIFTING heroine Michaela Breeze won the first of Wales' three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

The 26-year-old Devon-based PE teacher claimed her second Commonwealth triumph, with her victory in the 63kg category.

Michaela BreezeBreeze said winning gold was an awesome feeling. "I wanted this so much, I've trained so hard for this and it makes it all so worthwhile," said Breeze, who qualifies for Wales through her Llanidloes-born father.

"It is not all glamour and glory and it is nice to get reward for all that hard work. The crowd were awesome and it gives you such a lift to hear that atmosphere. It is great to break some records and get some personal bests."

Breeze lifted a personal best of 100kg in the snatch and recorded a total of 220kg for a Commonwealth overall record.

A silver medallist in Manchester four years ago, Breeze pushed Canada's Christine Girard and Miel McGerrigle into silver and bronze.

"This has made all those years of training and all the pain I've been through worthwhile because it's the one I've been waiting for," said Breeze. "I'm so happy to have broken the Commonwealth record for the snatch and the overall score.

"I had a knee operation just before Christmas so I'm just so grateful to all the people back home who have helped fix me up and get me to this point."
