Water Polo

Hanna GuiseHANNA GUISE, who represents Cardiff Ladies in the National Water Polo League and is captain of the Welsh Universities Water Polo team, has been appointed as the Vale of Glamorgan Council's new assistant Dragon Sport officer.

Originally from Milton Keynes, Guise joins Dragon sport officer Rachel McGuinness in introducing primary school age children to sport across the area.

University Wales Institute Cardiff graduate Guise is currently working towards her Masters in sports development and coaching. Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery. The scheme is designed to offer seven to 11-year-olds fun, healthy and enjoyable sporting opportunities.

No doubt Guise will be passing on her enthusiasm for water polo to the youngsters.

The sport is one of the activities supported by the Welsh ASA for male and female athletes at junior and senior level.

Mini-polo is an introductory game developed by the ASA for younger participants and is offered by some of the local authority schemes.

The game is a cross between basketball and football played in water by teams of up to 13 players, of who up to seven take it in turns to be in the water. Participants need to be competent swimmers as most of the game is played in deep (1.8 metre plus) water.

A football size ball (with a slightly roughened surface) is passed between team members using one hand only until the team is in a position to try to shoot the ball past the goalkeeper.

A team is only allowed possession for 35 seconds at a time before attempting to score a goal. A game normally consists of four quarters lasting five to seven minutes each.
