David PhelpsMARKSMAN David Phelps won Wales' third and final gold medal of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with a range record in the men's 50m rifle prone.

Phelps' score of 693.3 points put him well clear of silver medalist Mike Babb (696.2) of England and India's Sanjeev Rajput (695.7), who took bronze.

The Cardiff ace, who led the scoring in the qualification round, was thrilled with the win, especially after missing out in Manchester four years ago.

"It is a fruition of a lot of hard work and dedication, not only from myself but from my friends and family," said Phelps, who had already claimed a bronze in Melbourne, finishing third in the men's 50m rifle prone pairs with Griff Morgan, who finished sixth in the individual event.

"I would like to thank everyone who has made it possible for us to get here and if it was not for Team Wales greasing the wheel, this sort of thing would not be able to happen," said Phelps, who joined swimmer David Davies and weightlifter Michaela Breeze in winning gold for Wales.

"I consider myself to be a professional amateur in my sport of target rifle shooting," says Phelps on his web blog. "For example, I train and compete as professionally as I can, but don't earn a salary or living money from it. It's for the love of the sport and the competition."

Joanne Brekke added to Wales' medal tally in the shooting events by securing the bronze in the 50m rifle prone individual event. Only two shots separated bronze from gold medal position in a high-quality final.
