Luge

Luge

OK it might not strictly qualify as a winter sport but if you want to become one of the fastest men or women on ice - like GB  luge national champion Anna Poole - then Oakwood theme park could be the place to start.

Oakwood in Pembrokeshire is one of the few British theme parks to incorporate a luge track among its facilities.

The track is 850 metres long and 276 metres high and while it doesn't quite offer the same thrill as racing down the ice at breakneck speeds it's a fun way to find out what the sport's about.

Some theme parks have luges as rides but they are also also found at ski centres as a way of keeping the income flowing during the summer months.

A luge is like a tobogan. At Oakwood you go to the top of the track in a chair lift and then it's all downhill after that. But instead of sliding down the ice on blades you're heading down the track on wheels. You control the speed with a brake so you can go as fast or a slow as you like.
