IF you harbour dreams of standing on the podium, spraying the crowds with champion after pipping Michael Schumacher to the chequered flag in Monaco or Imola then karting is the perfect way for you to start.
Karting offers the ideal introduction to the world of motorsport, with karts available for aspiring Formula One drivers as young as eight years old.
Although karts look much alike to the uninitiated, there are many classes, from 60cc Cadets to 160mph Formula E.
Karts are divided into two basic categories: those with direct drive (which race on short circuits) and those with gearboxes (which race on both the long and short circuits).
The Association of British Kart Clubs was formed in 1990 to act as an interface between kart clubs and the governing body, the Motor Sports Association. The clubs are represented by a steering group which is elected each year during the ABkC AGM, held in the autumn.
The ABkC steering group is also recognised as the MSA Kart Regional Committee with many responsibilities which include the class regulations contained in the MSA Kart Race Yearbook.
Wales is not short of venues for karting but the Llandow Kart Club at St Athans in the Vale of Glamorgan is one of the only club that is a member of the ABkC.
