THE 2006 Five Nations fencing championships were hosted by Wales at the Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff, in April.
The Wales fencers finished third overall, behind England and Scotland. Only Scotland's women prevented England from taking a clean-sweep of trophies in the competition - which involves the four home nations plus the Republic of Ireland - by capturing the sabre honours.
Wales beat Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the men's foil, but were narrowly beaten by England and were well beaten by the Scots; the women achieved similar success, but suffered a comprehensive defeat by England, while pushing the Scots close.
The men's epee team lost to England but did well to beat Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. But their competition ended in disappointment in the last match, going down 40-39 to Northern Ireland. For the women, there were wins against Northern Ireland and the Republic, but defeats by Scotland and England.
The men's sabre team only managed one victory - against the Republic of Irealnd - while the women's team, including three fencers making their senior debuts, took encouragement from a win against Northern Ireland.
