HE'S the father of Welsh show jumping - a living legend who turned a country pastime into a popular spectator sport in the 1960s and 1970s.
David Broome was born in Fairwater, Cardiff, in 1940 and won his first show jumping competition at the age of nine, becoming world champion at the age of 21. He took part in six Olympic Games as a member of the British team, returning with two bronze medals.
During his riding career Broome was European champion three times and World Champion twice, and in 1960 was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Now Broome runs one of the country's leading show centres located at Crick, near Chepstow, hosting in the region of 300 shows per year from March to October.
The David Broome Event Centre offers competitors superb facilities with stabling for 300 horse and a fabulous all-weather arena, which will host the Welsh Masters from 17-21 August this year.
