TWO teenage canoeists are heading for uncharted waters after being selected for the Great Britain U21 Canoe Polo squad.
Aberfan Canoe Club members Alun Griffiths, aged 18, and 19-year-old Antony Morgan, from Nelson, can now looking forward to taking part in several international competitions before the World Championships in Amsterdam this August.
The pair, who made the squad after coming through an intensive selection process in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, have played for the Welsh national team for the past two years, as well as representing the Aberfan senior team.
Canoe polo is a team sport played in purpose-built kayaks and is a cross between water polo and basketball. Two teams compete to score goals in a rectangular net suspended two metres above water, with the ball being thrown or flicked with the paddle.
There are two seasons, the winter season in which competitions are held indoors, and the summer season which is the international season when most tournaments are held outdoors.
