 MISSY LENDER quit the basketball scene in the United States - and ended up skippering a team in the rugby-mad Rhondda Valley instead. Sounds strange, but it kind of figured!
Because a career on court - no matter where in the world - has always been on the cards for the 6ft 2ins east coast girl.
Lender has spent 12 seasons in the Valleys helping the Rhondda Rebels to success in the British women's national league.
She said, "I really enjoy playing for the Rhondda Rebels and I like going around the junior schools helping to develop local talent in our development scheme.
"From my first day in Wales I have had an awesome welcome."
Two seasons ago, Missy helped steer the Rhondda Rebels to a unique treble when they became the first team outside England to clinch the National League title, cup and play-off trophies.
Her influence off the court has been just as remarkable. As well as her duties as club captain, Missy plays a crucial role in the Rebels' development scheme - helping to raise the profile of the sport among young players.
"I love going into schools and seeing the kids progress and improve," said Lender. "I see kids walking around bouncing a basketball instead of kicking a football and it's also really nice to see basketball hoops in the parks."
There are around 40 schools now involved in the scheme, with over 2,500 young players throughout the Rhondda Valley and beyond being regularly coached by their Rebels heroes.
"We have a great following and the Rebels attract one of the biggest crowds in the British League," said Lender. "A lot of people have put a lot into this team and we still want to be the best," she added.
